Stuttering

Stuttering usually appears after the general phases of normal speech development at the ages of 2–4 years and affects boys at a higher rate [3, 5–7]. Stuttering is described as the observance of interruptions in speech fluency which may include repetitive sounds (one-syllable to words/phrases), prolongation of sounds, tense pauses, fixed postures of speech mechanisms, and difficulty in speaking [3, 6, 7]. Generally, as the child develops, the condition is usually self-resolved [5, 6]. However, if stuttering persists past the age of 4, risk factors to be explored are similar to those related to speech delay and include environmental factors such as home environment and traumatic events [3]. Great importance is placed on the early identification and intervention for stuttering in order to prevent long-term disabilities [6]. Referral to a speech therapist is highly recommended if the problem persists for treatment with syllable-timed speech and/or the Lidcombe Program, among other interventions [3, 5, 7].
